#236 of 365 – 3 Memorial Day haiku

Memorial day haiku

funeral over

flag in hand; VA letter comes

“appointment confirmed”

seems a tardy crumb

after all that’s been given

my prayers of thanks

thunder in the streets

bikes, flags and tears; for those gone

but not forgotten

Well done. With the letter–sadly fitting to Memorial Day 2014.

Oh gosh, I’ve not recovered from yesterday–still very weepy, after watching a documentary about “brothers” from Charlie Company–their year in Vietnam. My generation’s war, the “unpopular” one, as if war could be anything else. Your poetry is always an addition to my day–painfully good.

Although I was a child during the Vietnam War, I have an undeniable soft spot for the veterans who fought in it. They had two wars to fight; Vietnam, and the war here when they returned home.
