#353 of 365 – “mistrial”

“mistrial”

across from the alley

where it still appears clean

where the trash is hidden

and the rodents unseen

I sit in the momentary

bliss of denial

as if danger were averted

by a public mistrial

the news has faded

debates disappeared

the weekend is here

guard-posts have been cleared

no hostages exist

no evil persists

all children are tucked in

read to and kissed

I hold my breath

and close my eyes

as if reality can be erased

behind this disguise

but then I breathe

and the feeling is gone

just as sure as the nighttime

gives way to dawn
