#361 of 365 – “scraps”

“scraps”

ladders to Heaven

from dreams on the ground

broken souls praying

for paths to be found

children who sleep

with full bellies in sheets

newly-made orphans

who sleep in the streets

guns on the prowl

to kill or convert

families and histories

burned in the dirt

what scraps will we gather

what threads used  to join

what garments will tomorrow have

to throw round his loin

what memories, like weapons

will the children wield

what games will they have left

to play in the field

have we given their spirits

any green grass to grow

what is it we’re building

does anyone know?
